How to request an external review
If your internal appeal is denied, you can usually ask for an external review. An independent third party decides, not your insurer.
Key points (from HealthCare.gov)
- You must file a written request within 4 months of receiving the final denial notice.
- Expedited reviews are decided as soon as possible, and no later than 72 hours after the request.
- In urgent situations, you may be able to request an external review at the same time as your internal appeal.
Your final denial letter should explain how to file and whether your state or the federal process applies. Follow those instructions closely.
